Volkswagen Arena

The Volkswagen Arena, also known as the VfL Wolfsburg Arena, is the home ground of football club VfL Wolfsburg. The Volkswagen Arena opened in 2002 and has a capacity of 30,000 from which 8000 consist of standing areas.

Before VfL Wolfsburg moved to the Volkswagen Arena, they played at the VfL-Stadion am Elsterweg. This stadium wasn’t viewed as Bundesliga worthy which is why plans for the construction of a new stadium were immediately made after the club’s promotion. The construction finally started in 2001 and opened only one and a half year later. The construction was financed by the Volkswagen group and the city. The stadium is surrounded by leisure parks which were placed here at the same time as the stadium. The stadium cost a total of 53 million euros and is seen as a glass football temple by many supporters. VfL Wolfsburg was significantly more visited after the opening of the Volkswagen Arena. This confirmed that the club had really needed a new stadium. The Volkswagen Arena also hosts concerts.

Hyper modern stadium

The Volkswagen Arena was the first stadium in Germany that installed LED light. 84 speakers hang in the stadium as well as two giant screens on which supporters can view the match, too. It doesn’t stop here because the pitch is made of hybrid grass. This means that it is natural, but it’s enforced by synthetic fibres so it won’t be affected by the weather. The Volkswagen Arena was the first stadium that introduced this system, as well. Furthermore, the stadium makes use of 5G technology. A stadium can’t get any more modern than this!

Directions to the Volkswagen Arena

The Volkswagen Arena is pretty close to Wolfsburg’s city centre. It only takes fifteen minutes to walk from Wolfburg’s central station to the Volkswagen Arena. You avoid traffic this way and you can be sure of arriving at the stadium on time. Would you rather use public transportation? Then you should take either bus 160, 170, 213 or 380 from Wolfsburg Hauptbahnhof. All of these buses transport you to the stadium in ten minutes.
