Club Atlético de Madrid Sociedad Anónomia Deportiva, simply known as Atlético Madrid, were founded in 1903; only one year after their big brother Real Madrid was founded. The club became independent of parent-club Athletic Bilbao in 1921, and was invited to join the Primera División in 1928.
Atlético Madrid’s greatest successes were between 1960 and 1980, as they won the Intercontinental Cup, 4 League titles, 1 UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup and 5 Copa del Rey-titles. Winning the Intercontinental Cup without ever having won an international competition is unique. The reason Atlético Madrid participated was quite bizarre: Bayern Munich had refused to participate because they simply did not want to make the journey to South America. Atlético Madrid have never been able to win the Champions League: they have been a runner-up three times, more than any other club.
Atlético Madrid’s home kit is red with white vertical striped shirts, and has been like this since 1911. They used to play their home matches at the Estadio Vicente Calderón until 2017, which had a capacity of almost 55,000. Nowadays, they play all their home matches in the Wanda Metropolitano, a brand new stadium with a capacity of 67,000. It’s the third biggest stadium of Spain, following up Camp Nou in Barcelona (99,000) and Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid (81,000).
The new stadium perfectly reflects Atlético Madrid’s ambitions: they belong at the top tier of Spanish football and are a worthy opponent to clubs such as FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. In the Copa del Rey-final in 2013 they beat Real Madrid with 2-1 and in 2014 they even won the League-title. In 2018, Atlético Madrid won their third Europa League-title and also won another UEFA Super Cup after beating Real Madrid again with 4-2. Diego Simeone is the club’s head coach and has been so since 2011. Under his management, out of 377 games, the club has won 233 games, 200 clean sheets and accomplished to get to 8 finals. With such great results Diego Simeone is often being compared to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
Last season, Los Rojiblancos (the Red-Whites) finished 2nd in La Liga, 9 points above Real Madrid, and they will do anything to fight for the title next season. With players such as Koke, Diego Costa and recently signed players João Félix, Marcos Llorente and Héctor Herrera, Atleti could be strong enough - despite missing Antoine Griezmann - to defeat Real and Barça.
Atlético Madrid is not just a great club with a beautiful stadium, it’s also located in the city of Madrid: a perfect way to extend your football trip with a mini city trip by visiting some of the cities' beautiful highlights, such as Plaza Mayor, Parque del Buen Retiro and the Temple of Debod.
