The special AFAS Stadium 'Behind the Army Barracks'

AFAS-Stadion Achter de Kazerne. The stadium’s name is derived from the Army Barracks that used to stand next to the stadium. KV Mechelen has been playing at the stadium since 1911. The AFAS Stadium slowly turned into a real stadium in which supporters had to pay a small fee in order to visit a football game of KV Mechelen. When the club started playing at their current location, the club promoted to Belgium’s first division for the first time in history. The AFAS Stadium is therefore seen as sacred amongst supporters. Despite of this, the club planned to construct a new stadium several times, but the plan never actually pulled through, due to financial difficulties. Large-scaled renovations took place instead, and the club is totally content with their stadium right now.

What to do around the stadium

Should you be well in time for the KV Mechelen match, you can always go to one of the cafés at the stadium. At the Grand Kavee, you can get a nice snack to warm up before, during or after the match. The café is located in the heated canteen on the first floor of Stand 3 (boxes I and H).  At the Verelst Kaffee, you can enjoy a glass of bubbles, a beer or a soda. After the match, this is also the place to be for dancing; extra fun after a KV Mechelen win! The Verelst Kaffee is free for supporters with a season ticket for the main stand, Skyboxes or Skyseats. If you don't have one, you can pay separately for access to the café. Prefer to finish the match day with a small drink? Then it's best to go to the canteen in Den I or Den F, where most of the home supporters are. Big fan of the club? Then you should visit the fanshop at the main entrance of the stadium for all your new fanitems!

Visit the AFAS Stadium

The AFAS Stadium is pretty close to Mechelen’s city centre. It only takes seven minutes to get to the stadium by car from the city’s centre. Since the distance between the centre and the stadium is only 1.4 kilometres, you could also walk to the stadium. This takes a little longer than 15 minutes, but you won’t be bothered by traffic. Would you still rather travel through public transportation? Then you could board the bus from Mechelen Biest to Mechelen Caputsteenstraat. You could also board the bus at Mechelen Wollemarkt and disembark the bus at Mechelen van Hoeystraat. It should be noted that you’ll only spend one minute in the bus, so you have to walk to the stadium anyway. The bus therefore doesn’t really add something to your trip to the stadium.
