RheinEnergieStadion

The origin of the RheinEnergieStadion

Local energy company RheinEnergie AG bought the naming rights to FC Köln's stadium in 2004. The name of the stadium used to be Müngersdorfer Stadion and was also simply known as Stadion Köln. The stadium was built after the First World War. The stadium's arrival in the city provided jobs for as many as 15,000 people. The construction of the stadium cost a total of as much as EUR 47.4 million. The stadium was commissioned immediately and several national successes were achieved. 1. FC Köln moved into the stadium in 1948.

Great matches at the RheinEnergieStadion

After the RheinEnergieStadion was built, a lot of great matches took place at the stadium. Besides the home matches of 1. FC Köln, athletics competitions were also held in the stadium. Only this did not last after World War II. After the stadium was renovated in 1972, the World Cup took place in Germany and Köln wanted the RheinEnergieStadion to be used as well. The renovation was intended to increase the capacity to 80,000, but during the renovation itself this proved to be unrealistic, as it would cost more money than estimated beforehand. So during that World Cup, the RheinEnergieStadion was not used. However, the club can be proud of the matches that have already been played in the atmospheric stadium.
